Shelter Volunteer and Her Husband Adopt Two Three-Legged Dogs

Rescue dogs often face some harrowing experiences that lead them to a shelter in the first place. For two dogs in Washington State, severely injured legs were the culprit. These two pooches, who arrived at the same shelter at different times, both needed amputations. Their similar paths ended up leading to a common destination: a forever home with the same volunteer.

The first pooch, Frankie, came into the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County after being hit by a car. A police officer who responded to the scene brought him in. Once he was examined, the staff realized he would need to have a leg amputation to survive.

After the surgery, the shelter staff worked hard to rehabilitate him. One volunteer in particular, Caitlyn Walker, found herself smitten with this determined dog as she helped him adjust. She decided she wanted to help him out on a permanent basis as his fur mom; all she needed to do was clear it with her husband. When confronted with Frankie’s endearing little face, he couldn’t say no, and this newly three-legged pooch had his forever home.

Walker was so glad her volunteer work at the shelter led to meeting this lovable dog, saying, “I strongly recommend to anyone that volunteering with rescued animals can bring you to your newest best friend.”

Not too long later, another best friend for her and Frankie was on her way. An injured pup found by a good Samaritan was again brought to the shelter. Sally, as she was later named, also needed an amputation. As the shelter staff worked to get her on the mend, Walker couldn’t resist this second three-legged pooch, and she brought her home to meet Frankie.

His humans say that the two became fast friends, and Sally’s boldness helped Frankie become a little braver himself. Her zest for life also helped Frankie learn how to have some fun.

Walker says, “I am so thankful for the act of good Samaritans bringing Frankie and Sally to our local humane society. They have been such great additions to our family and there is a clear love they have for each other. Being a volunteer was the best opportunity to meet my pups and know they were meant to be for my husband and I!”
