UPS delivery driver Jason Coronado was not planning on adopting a dog, but things don’t always go as planned, and this time fate had something extra-special in mind. Nobody could have seen this coming.
When Coronado showed up at the Buffalo City Animal Shelter to deliver packages on October 5th, 2018, a pit bull and terrier mix named Ernie jumped right up into his truck and refused to get out.
“I call him up to the truck, and he pretty much just hopped up in, and I was like, ‘Okay,'” says Coronado. “He hopped up and just sat there and did not want to leave.”
Luckily, it wasn’t just love at first sight for Ernie. Coronado also appears to have taken to the dog from the very beginning.
“He is probably my idea of a perfect dog,” admits Coronado.
Coronado did eventually get Ernie to leave his truck, and he continued on his route, leaving the dog behind at the shelter. But that one encounter was all it took to get the gears turning in his mind. “I wanted him to have a good home,” he says.

Coronado went home and talked to his family about adopting the dog, and they soon came to the conclusion that Ernie would make an excellent addition to the family. Shortly thereafter, Coronado returned to the shelter to bring Ernie home.
Now Ernie lives with Coronado and his family and spends his days following his beloved new owner around the house. He will spend the holiday season with his forever family, and it’s just the very beginning of his happily ever after.
“He likes to sleep and lounge and he likes to eat treats and he’s just a big lap dog,” says Coronado.
Congratulations to both Coronado and Ernie as they begin their journey together! Watch the video below to see how Ernie is enjoying his new forever home.
