We have had our fair share of things to worry about this year, between the coronavirus pandemic, natural disasters, murder Hornets, and other sensational news headlines. There is also something else that is getting ready to become a problem in many areas, now that the weather is getting warmer. I’m talking about mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes seem to be a distant memory for those who are still dealing with some colder weather. It’s always good to have a refresher, so remember that mosquitoes are there to annoy you all summer long. They tend to be anywhere there is warm weather and the right conditions, but if you live in certain areas, the problem is going to be worse.
Orkin is a leading national pest control company that comes out with a “top mosquito cities” list every year. It was just released for 2020, so if you live in one of the following cities, you might just want to invest in some mosquito repellent.
1. Atlanta, Georgia
2. Los Angeles, California
3. Washington, D.C.
4. New York, New York
5. Chicago, Illinois
6. Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas
7. Detroit, Michigan
8. Charlotte, N.C.
9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
10. Miami, Florida
Since we will be staying at home through the summer in many areas, we will likely be taking advantage of any opportunity we have to go outside. If you happen to live in a hotspot (or any area where mosquitoes are bad), it’s good to take the proper precautions. After all, mosquitoes are more than annoying, they can also carry diseases such as the Zika virus.
“Zika virus is currently one of the most notable illnesses that can be spread by mosquitoes, and it will likely be a problem again this year, especially in areas where the type of mosquito that can carry the virus thrives,” explained Orkin entomologist, Mark Beavers, Ph.D.
This list isn’t meant to frighten everyone, it’s just something that Orkin puts out every year to make people aware of problems they may experience when the weather gets warmer.
“It’s always Orkin’s priority to protect public health, and that starts at home,” said Freeman Elliott, President at Orkin. “A safe, healthy home is more essential than ever, and we want to ensure peace of mind where we can.”
Along with the list, some tips were also offered for some extra security for you and your family members from any unwanted pests in the backyard.
One important thing to do is to remove anything that has standing water in your yards, such as birdbaths, water buckets, and similar items. If the water is there, the mosquitoes are going to gather and breed.
Trim your shrubbery on a regular basis, especially if you have a lot in your yard. Mosquitoes tend to congregate in high humidity areas, such as in bushes.
If you can’t get rid of the mosquitoes, make sure that you have some bug repellent on to keep them away.
I love to write and it keeps me busy. I've been working online, full time since 1999.
