39 tigers and three back bears have been rescued from Joe exotic’s roadside zoo in Oklahoma. They are now living at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. Those animals were featured in the series, Tiger King on Netflix.
The majority of the animals were rescued in 2017 by the Wild Animal Sanctuary staff. It occurred as a result of a court settlement that was facilitated by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Tiger King is the story about “Joe Exotic,” whose actual name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage. It is currently the most-streamed series on Netflix. The story is about an eccentric owner of a for-profit park that was known as the G.W. Exotic Animal Memorial Foundation.

A number of criminal allegations and lawsuits were coming up when the park was open for business. Some of the issues included possible animal abuse and even murder.
“It’s not about the Netflix film, it’s not about anything other than we are trying to give them the best life possible,” said Becca Miceli, Chief Science and Animal Welfare Office at The Wild Animal Sanctuary. according to Local21News.
Miceli’s job is taking care of the animals. She didn’t really think it was a good idea to watch the Netflix series but wanted to see how zoo conditions were shown to the public.
“It was difficult, I mean a lot of this stuff we saw for ourselves when we were there, the small enclosures, the indiscriminate breeding, the cub experiences, the exploitation, so all of that was very apparent when we were on the rescue,” she said according to The Denver Channel.

When their zoo received the tigers from Joe Exotic, they had some serious issues with their physical and mental health. Some of the animals are still recovering.
“They did have some issues when we first got them, a lot of dental issues, things of that nature. Unfortunately, they did have some nutritional things that once they got on a better diet, had some things supplemented that they needed, some specific vitamins that big cats can lack,” said Miceli.
The 40-year-old, 789-acre property where The Wild Animal Sanctuary exists has some 550 animals. They are a non-profit and the largest and oldest park that specializes in large carnivores. Over 1000 animals have been rescued since their inception.

“We can’t put these animals back in the wild, so we are giving them as much open space and as much freedom as they can possibly have.”
Each animal at the sanctuary is given personalized care and attention. Tigers and other animals are able to roam about in specialized enclosures with access to water features and plenty of space.
The public’s relations director for the Wild Animal Sanctuary, Kent Drotar talked about the series on Netflix and emphasized the animals perspective.
“We hope that people see past the hype, ‘glamour’ and intrigue and focus on the animals caught up in it all—especially the ones that are still being exploited.”
Drotar wants to discourage people from supporting organizations that gain financially from the use of wild animals.

The final six tigers that came from Exotic’s zoo were recently sent to their new home in Colorado from Dade City Wild Things. More than likely, they will live on a 9000-acre tract of land that The Wild Animal Sanctuary operates, according to Patrick Craig, the executive director.
