Hurricane Dorian was a Category 5 storm – one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record – as it made landfall on the Bahamas. While people were busy boarding up their homes and running for their lives, one woman and her brother were rescuing 97 stray dogs.
Chella Phillips is known as the “crazy dog lady” and operates a rescue called The Voiceless Dogs Of Nassau, Bahamas. Phillips moved to the Bahamas fifteen years ago and could not ignore all the stray dogs begging for food and love. She has made it her mission to take them in and show them the love they deserve.
When Hurricane Dorian headed straight for the Bahamas with sustained winds at 185 mph, Phillips and her brother rounded up as many stray dogs as they could fit into her home. A total of 97 dogs were taken indoors.
Phillips posted, “97 dogs are inside my house and 79 of them are inside my master bedroom.
It has been insane since last night, poop and piss non stop but at least they are respecting my bed and nobody has dared to jump in. We have barricaded the refuge and nobody is outside, the music is playing in all directions of the house and the AC is blowing for them.”
She went on to say, “I managed to bring some less fortunate ones and I really appreciate some of you donating for crates.. I really needed it for the scared ones and the sick ones. so Thank you!”
As the winds tore apart the island, the power went out and water started to rise. Phillips went without sleep to make sure that all the dogs remained safe and worked tirelessly to keep the water from coming into the home.
“All services are down, all TVs are fried from the lightnings so no more cartoons for the sick dogs until we can purchase new ones. My brother slept an hour, I had been on my feet without any sleep drying the house and looking after my terrified dogs.”
Phillips is heartbroken for all the stray dogs that were not able to find shelter and wrote, “I don’t see how any dogs or any living being could have survived outside. My heart goes out to them.”
People have reached out to help Phillips and thank her for her selfless act. She reassured everyone that all the dogs were on their best behavior in the cramped conditions. She posted, “For all the ones asking.. yes.. everyone here gets along and welcome the newcomers with tail wags cause they know they are their brothers and sisters in suffering on the streets..”
“They are not like the selfish humans that mistreated and abused them or simply passed them by and let them to die on the streets. Each of my babies deserve to have loving homes, so please, I am begging for rescues to help them!!
My heart is breaking that I left so many on the streets cause I had no more room to bring them.. Please.. Please!!”
Her kindness and generosity are being repaid with donations from people around the world to help care for her beloved stray dogs. We need more people like her and her brother in this world.
Together, we can be There When It Matters, and help those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and along the Atlantic coast. 100% of your donation will go towards delivering life-saving supplies for humans and pets.
