Spry Girl “Rascal” Doesn’t Believe in Discriminating Against Seniors

Meet Rascal, a spry senior who first came to Pima Animal Care Center after a run-in with a cactus. They didn’t get a chance to see how the cactus made out, but Rascal was full of prickly spines, so they assumed it was a draw. While her name may conjure up images of wild puppy shenanigans, Rascal is actually a mature gal and wants to make sure you don’t make assumptions based on her name alone. You can’t judge a book by its cover, right?

Rascal recently spent a bit of time in a foster home, and her foster family described her as a lovely dog who just wants to be around her humans. She loves to cuddle and follow her people around the house. While she is gentle and affectionate with a moderate activity level, this senior is still spry! She was quiet while she was in her foster home and rode well in the car. She enjoys toys that she can rip up or shred and will thrive in a home where she can get plenty of attention and a bit of training. You’re never too old to learn or reenforce good habits!

Animal Shelter Volunteers

Here’s what Rascal’s volunteer friends at PACC have said about her:

“I’ve enjoyed walking Rascal so much. When I first met her, she was easy to leash and exit from her kennel. She walked very well, but what endeared her to me is that she likes to hug. She would stand on her hind legs and put her front two legs on my chest during our outing. It really felt as if she just wanted to be hugged.

“It was the sweetest thing, and I wish I could have hugged her for as long as she wanted. But we continued our walk (with intermittent hugging) and she showed no reactivity to anything. This sweet older girl is overlooked and she obviously just wants a home that will give her love and affection. I’m hopeful for her!”

“Rascal is a smart and sassy lady who has been in the shelter for way too long! She is confident and independent, yet affectionate. She loves attention and snuggles with volunteers when she’s out on walks. She’s a senior but she has a puppy-level playfulness at times and acts middle-aged at best!”

PACC

Rascal is a spayed tan-and-white Basenji mix who is believed to be about 10 years old and weighs approximately 53 pounds. This silver fox (yes, she’s actually a lovely tan color) was fairly assertive when meeting other dogs in playgroup, so she’d really like to meet any resident dogs before heading home to make sure it’s a good fit.

Don’t miss out on this girl. She’s been at the shelter since June 26, 2022, and is ready to go home. If you are interested in adopting Rascal, please email pacc.adopt@pima.gov with any additional questions or for an app. She’s in Kennel D037, and her ID# is A781691.
