Randy and Donna from Stray Rescue of St. Louis, heard about a mama dog and her puppies who had been living alone at an abandoned house.
As soon as they walked up on the property, they heard tiny barks from the puppies and a much louder bark which was from the mom. As they approached, the mama dog grew very protective of her pups and kept barking at the rescuers.
The puppies were found in the bushes in the yard. Then they went inside to look for the mom and her other puppies. The house was absolutely decrepit inside. The walls were literally crumbling around them. It was extremely filthy and very heartbreaking to know that these dogs have been living inside this horrible place.
Randy got closer to the mama dog inside. She had stopped barking and was just sitting there watching his every move. At this point she realized that he wasn’t a threat, but she was still confused as to who these people were and what they were going to do.
He started throwing pieces of food near her so she’d begin to trust him. She gobbled them up so fast. As they got closer and shined the light on her, they discovered how bad of shape she was in. She was obviously malnourished and her skin was in terrible shape, with missing patches of fur.
As she gained his trust, Randy began feeding her out of his hand. He was then able to slip the leash around her head, and she cooperated well. Then, two more puppies were found underneath debris. As soon as they saw Donna with the camera and flashlight, they crawled right out to her. She found another puppy in the same room after following his cries.
While Donna was searching for the rest of the puppies, Randy was outside with the mama dog. She was actually extremely friendly and sweet and loved the new attention she was getting. Donna then brought out three of the puppies in a laundry basket. Once they were in daylight, the rescuers saw how bad of shape they were in as well. They found the rest of the puppies and there wound up being seven in total!
They brought the mama dog, who they named Solar, and her seven puppies to the animal hospital to be examined. They will all be treated and are on the road to recovery. To adopt or foster, please visit: https://www.strayrescue.org
