Popular Canned Cat Food Recalled For Thiamine DeficiencyMatthew Russell
J.M. Smucker has issued a volunteer recall of 9Lives® Protein Plus® wet, canned cat food due to possible low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1).
No illness has been reported by pet owners, but the manufacturer has decided to recall the product out of an abundance of caution.
The J.M. Smucker recall joins a growing number of others for the year of 2018.

According to the FDA recall statement, the following product is being recalled:

Bags affected by this recall have a Best By Date code of February 25, 2020 through September 13, 2020 printed on the back or bottom of each bag.
Where was it sold?
These products were distributed by The J.M. Smucker company to a variety of retailers nationwide. No other 9Lives® products or products of The J.M. Smucker Company are impacted by this recall. The FDA affirms that all other J.M. Smucker dog and cat food products are safe to feed to pets.
Symptoms of Thiamine deficiency
Cats who lack thiamine in their diet may exhibit gastrointestinal or neurological symptoms such as:
- decreased appetite
- failure to grow
- weight loss
“In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which include ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, mental dullness, blindness, wobbly walking, circling, falling, seizures, and sudden death,” the FDA maintains.

According to the FDA, pet owners and those caring for pets should stop feeding the products listed above immediately.
