During the winter months, skunks sometimes hibernate for short periods of time and are generally less active. As the weather gets warmer, skunks become more alert and active, and are at their activity peak around dawn or dusk. During the day they may be out foraging for food.

Their homes are usually selected based on their proximity to a convenient and consistent food source such as a garbage can, dog or cat food, or an insect-heavy lawn. They have been known to live in dens that they dig in the ground, in tree stumps, woodpiles, underneath decks, and in garden sheds.

So, what if your dog finds a skunk in your yard and gets sprayed? It’s every pet owner’s worst nightmare, but it’s not the end of the world.

Here’s what to do if your dog gets sprayed by a skunk…

5. Don’t Panic!

Try to remain calm. Your dog is going to be frantic because of the strange and intense smell that is all around him, and you need to reduce his stress by acting in a calm and collected manner.

4. Keep Your Pup Outside.

To avoid your dog spreading the skunk smell through your entire house, keep them outside while you prepare a solution. Check their eyes immediately after the incident and if they are red and irritated, rinse with water.

3. Get Mixing

Over the counter skunk remedies work fast, are available at most pet stores, and are easy to use, but if you don’t have any of those available, there are still some ways you can help your pup (and your nose) recover. Mix these ingredients together after your dog is sprayed with a skunk in order to neutralize the odor:

• 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at your local pharmacy)
• 1/4 cup baking soda
• 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
