Shelters Give Animals Celebrity Names To Increase Chance of Adoption

Wouldn't you love to bring home a furry friend who happens to have the same name as your favorite movie star? That is what many small animal shelters believe will happen if they give their dogs celebrity names, such as Janeane Garofalo and Dakota Fanning. According to the New York Times, the Badass Brooklyn Animal Shelter in New York helped find a mixed boxer a forever home after naming him James Earl Jones.

"My first dog was named Simba, and I thought it was a sign that James Earl Jones played Simba's father in 'The Lion King,'" Heather Allard, a woman from Pawtucket, R.I., who adopted the dog, told the source.

Other shelters, like See Spot Rescued, which is based in Jersey City, N.J., are using celebrity names to tempt animal and pop culture fans to adopt their shelter pets. Currently, the organization is featuring a 4-year-old sheperd and shar-pei mix, named after "Three's Company" star Joyce Dewitt, on their Facebook page. Additionally, the group has Gayle King a dachshund-beagle mix up for adoption.

See Spot Rescued uses a variety of celebrity names to spike the interest of potential pet owners. Recently, they named a few dogs after newscasters, such as Lester Holt and Diane Sawyer.
