In some ways it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
In this case, the needle is several yards of fishing line, and the haystack is a colony of seals.
In the video below, a specialized group of marine rescuers keep a close eye on the colony, picking out the seals who are tangled up in fishing line. They run into the midst of the colony, retrieve a struggling seal, and pull it to the side.
Using scissors, one rescuer cuts the seal free from the tangle and lets it go back into the ocean.

Every time I see videos like this I wonder what the animal must think has happened to them,”
commented u/baronvonpenguin. “You’re minding your own business when all of a sudden you get caught by the ultimate predator, an animal so dangerous that lions and hyenas stay the fuck away. Then, instead of eating you they fix whatever is wrong with you and send you on your way. It must be like getting chased by a T-Rex then when he catches you, he just combs your hair and pats you on the head.”
“There’s many stories out there about wild animals returning to visit the people who helped them,” wrote u/
Quartzclawz “Animals definitely can appreciate, and recognize that a human has helped them. I’ve worked with many different species of animal, and their thought process is much more complex then we give them credit for. It’s just different then ours.”
“It’s probably similar to catching a baseball some body has hit into the air, if you spot it before it starts moving its really easy to follow as you run after it,” wrote u/DrWilliamson89. “If you have to find it after the chaos starts, it’d be a lot harder. Just a guess, but that’s where my brain goes.”
