Man Tired Of Old Sheep Moved And Left Her Behind, But She’s Found A New Purpose In LifeThe Animal Rescue Site
Because Sammie the sheep was nine years old, her owner said she was too old to accomplish anything. As he planned to move across the country, he hoped that Sammie would die before he had to leave. When the day came to leave, she was still alive so he called Maryland animal rescue, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary.
Fortunately, the facility welcomed the sheep with open arms. Three years later, Sammie is still alive and enjoying life. Despite being arthritic in her old age, she has become a sort of mother figure to the other animals at the sanctuary.
Of course, every old lady needs an old lady friend. When Sammie arrived at the sanctuary, she immediately bonded with another rescued sheep, Daisy. Daisy had been at the facility her entire life. As she got older, she lost her eyesight to cataracts, but still finds the strength to spend everyday with her best friend, Sammie.
The director of Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, Terry Cummings, spoke to The Dodo about how Sammie helps comforts the animals and has become a “grandmother” figure to the animals, like a disabled sheep.
“She loved to cuddle with him when he was taken out of his wheelchair cart,” Cummings told The Dodo. “Every day when he would come back to the barn she would ‘baaah’ for him until they were back together.”
Despite their old age, the sanctuary makes sure that these elderly animals are able to enjoy every minute of the life they have left.
“Every day the elderly sheep receive arthritis medicine in a cookie sandwich, senior feed, fresh hay and chopped forage, which they can consume easier with their missing teeth,” the sanctuary writes. “[A]long with Franny, another elderly ewe, they are nicknamed ‘the Golden Girls.'”
