Meet The Smallest Cat In The World: The Rusty Spotted Cat

If you happen to have a cat in your life, you already realize that they are unique and wonderful creatures.

Although we may think of them as having just a little bit of a wild streak, that is nothing compared to what cats that truly live in the wild have.

In most cases, a cat that lives in the wild will be larger than the common house cat. That isn’t the case, however, with the Rusty-spotted cat.

After all, they tip the scales at about 4 pounds, and many of them are even smaller. No wonder they are considered to be the smallest feline in the world!

In order to introduce us to the Rusty-spotted cat, BBC has produced a great video. When you first look at the cat, you might think that you are looking at a kitten but, since they only grow up to 20 inches long, this one is fully mature.

If you are thinking that you’d be able to find one of these in your local area, that is not likely the case. You will find them in the forests of Sri Lanka and India. In most cases, they stick to the forest floor but they have been known to climb a tree on occasion if they are hungry enough.

Approximately 10,000 Rusty-spotted cats live in the wild today and up to 50 are kept in captivity. As is the case with many animals, the status of the smallest cat in the world is threatened because of its limited habitat which is also shrinking.

Conservationists are looking toward the future with optimism, as the Rusty-spotted cat is adaptable and can live in many different environments, including scrublands and grasslands. They may even be able to live among the rocks on a hillside, but they prefer to live in the forest.
