They say repetition and practice are key to winning, but for a dog in Las Vegas, Nevada, it happened to be beginner’s luck that got him the gold medal.
The 2-year-old Belgian Malinois had never competed in an obstacle course before. In fact, he’d never even run through one!
Despite that, Royal’s owner decided to enter him in the Doggy Olympics – and he won the gold medal.
The event happened during the halftime of the Las Vegas Lights soccer game, and a video captured Royal’s run through the course.

As he goes through the obstacles, it’s clear he’s a beginner. He starts off strong with a big face plant onto the ground, followed by missing the tunnel and having to turn back. He continues making mistakes but carries on through the course with a happy attitude.
At the end, he jumps over the entire hoop obstacle (instead of jumping through it) and trots off the field with a cheerful strut.
His owner couldn’t help but hold back laughter and smiles. They may have been beginners, but it was clear they were having a blast.
Royal’s owner shared the video with ViralHog, saying, “Despite never running through an obstacle course (and it showed), Royal the 2-year-old Belgian Malinois competed in the Doggy Olympics at halftime of the Las Vegas Lights soccer game and won the gold medal!”
Way to go, Royal!

As it turns out, Belgian Malinois are known for their quick ability to learn and their eagerness to bond with their human. The American Kennel Club states, “If you have ever seen a Mal perform an obedience routine, you know firsthand what a smart and eager breed this is.”
