Ricky Gervais Slams Trophy Hunters Five Years After The Death Of Cecil The Lion

Ricky Gervais may be a comedian but he doesn’t joke around when it comes to discussing trophy hunting. He supports a ban on the activity, referring to it as “humanity at its very worst.”

This isn’t the first time that Gervais has talked about animal welfare. Although it has been five years since Cecil the lion was shot and killed by Walter Palmer, who was vacationing in Zimbabwe, he hasn’t forgotten.

People around the world were outraged when Cecil was shot but it has been five years and there is still no ban in place. According to those who support a ban, dozens of other lions have been killed by UK hunters since that time.

The campaign is asking governments to outlaw trophy hunting and there are many celebrities who support the cause.

Gervais told the Sun:

“Why are we even having to make the case for banning trophy hunting in the year 2020?

It’s hard to think of anything more sickening or senseless than killing an animal for entertainment, then hacking it up so you can display its body parts and brag about it.

Trophy hunting is humanity at its very worst. We’ve had five years to do something since the killing of Cecil made everyone aware of what is going on.”

According to some statistics from the African Wildlife Foundation, lions may be extinct outside of captivity by 2050 if trophy hunting is allowed to continue.

The founder of the campaign to ban trophy hunting, Eduardo Goncalves, said: “The government promised to ban lion trophies after the killing of Cecil. Then it changed its mind. As a result, British hunters shot another 50 or more ‘Cecils.'”

He goes on to say that wildlife is on the brink and that the possibility of lions becoming extinct in the wild exists at this time.

According to The Independent, a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson said: “There is a clear manifesto commitment to ban the import of hunting trophies from endangered animals and we continue to work to end this shocking trade.”
