You Won’t Believe What These Workers Found… Again!Matthew M. Sullivan
In January, the Borneo Post released cell phone footage of what appears to be an emaciated and possibly ill sun bear that was spotted on a palm oil plantation in Malaysia. The plantation workers didn’t recognize the hairless bear, and knocked it unconscious while trying to fend it off after it allegedly charged at them.
The viral video sparked a widespread search and rescue for the bear by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), who had hoped to find the seemingly distressed and unhealthy creature.
Finally, after months of searching, the bear has been found around the same area where it was first seen.
Plantation workers found and caught the much sought-after bear on April 2, and she was thereafter turned over to SFC. Nickson Robi of the SFC told the Dodo, “The bear is in a good and safe place… She has eaten the food and drank the water we gave.”
The SFC brought the bear to Matang Wildlife Center, where she is being held under quarantine until veterinarians can determine exactly what’s wrong with her, though they know she is underweight and has signs of parasites.
Currently she is safe at Matang Wildlife Center in a rehabilitation facility, where she is being cared for and examined by veterinarians. They hope to release her back into the wild, but she may need to join the sanctuary’s eleven other resident sun bears if she becomes too accustomed to human care.
