Yuki, One Lucky Kitty

It was fall of 2011, when my then fiance (now husband) and I were driving home at one in the morning after seeing a movie. I was tired and laying back in my seat, fighting to stay awake because I knew we would be home soon. Suddenly, my fiance slowed to a stop and put the car in reverse. I didn’t think I felt a thud, but I was convinced we had hit something. I sat up in my seat, looking everywhere, asking him what it was. He stopped the car and said he thought he saw something but wasn’t sure what, and it had gone right under our car. I panicked. Worst case scenario, we had nearly (or had) hit a cat!

My fiance stepped out of the car, and sure enough, began calling “Kitty, kitty.” I was terrified that the cat was hit, or worse. So I sat in my seat nervously waiting for my fiance to return and give me the news. But the animal must have retreated to the overgrown weeds and foliage on the side of the road, so he came back empty handed. “Whatever it was, it’s gone now,” he said, putting the car back into drive.

My internal cat lover kicked in right before he pressed on the gas. I jumped from the car in a panic. We can’t just leave a cat in the middle of nowhere without making sure it’s okay! I quickly began looking through the weeds in search.

Suddenly, without much warning, something small, white, and shaking crawled up my pants leg. I began to sob and I picked up the terrified little kitten that had clung to me. Her nose was a mess and covered in blood.

I quickly put it together. The car in front of us must have thrown her from it, in an attempt to rid themselves of her. How could some one do that? I’ll never know. I promised her nothing bad would ever happen to her again, and we’ve had her ever since.
