One day, my daughter went to the local shelter with a friend just to look at the kitties. A woman came in with a scrawny, half-grown kitten in a box and wanted to surrender him because there was “something wrong with this cat.”

The counter person at the shelter lifted him out of the box and placed him on the counter. He was shaking, his head was bobbing, and he had trouble standing. His legs kept sliding out from under him like a newborn calf’s does.

The shelter worker told the woman he was “unadoptable” and would be put down. She gave the woman a paper to fill out. My daughter asked the woman to give the kitten to her instead. “Please, give him to me. My mom will be really mad at me for 10 minutes or so, but that’s all.”

So that is how Ludicrous came to live with us. He has cerebellar hypoplasia, and as he aged, he began to walk better and better. He still has his moments where he has a spasm or falls, and it often sounds like we have a young colt running through the house with our other cats.

He is a sweet boy who likes to be held and purrs sweet nothings into my ear. He loves sunbeams, tuna fish, and treats. He is now 12 years old.
