Nearly 250 Neglected Rabbits Rescued From One Property

In mid-February, 246 rabbits were confiscated from a Puyallup, Washington, property by Pierce County Animal Control and were brought to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. The rabbits varied in age and physical condition. The shelter’s veterinary staff responded to the property to quickly help assess the health of the rabbits as animal control began taking them to the shelter for care.

At the time, chief veterinary officer for the shelter, Dr. Jennifer Bennett, said, “This is a massive undertaking. It’s one of the largest intakes our shelter has experienced. We’ve been working around the clock to prepare for all the care these rabbits will need and we need the community’s help.”

That needed help included financial donations, which can still be made at the shelter’s website, as well as donated items. With so many rabbits inundating the shelter, concerned residents were also encouraged to apply to foster, with no experience with rabbits necessary. If you live in the area, that application can be found here.

Weeks later, the shelter is now working to find homes for many of these bunnies, though more than 150 are still receiving care, with which the shelter continues to seek community help. To help boost adoptions, meanwhile, all bunny adoption fees at the shelter are reduced to $25 from March 10 – 31.

The shelter currently has several adoptable rabbits, with more expected to become available over the next few weeks. Adoptable rabbits and critters can be viewed on the shelter’s website.

The rabbits vary in age, size, and personality. All adoptable rabbits have received a wellness exam by shelter veterinary staff, been spayed or neutered, and are microchipped with national registration. Adoption information can be found here.
