Rescue Of The Week: Sadie Mae
I wanted to rescue a dog, so I talked it over with my wife and she was all for it. I found some 8 week old puppies at a humane society an hour and a half from our house. My wife picked one out online she thought was cute and called for more information about her. They told us that the puppy had been in a litter of 12 that were rescued by a humane society volunteer from a dirt pit in a backyard of a house. They informed her that “Sadie Mae” had a class 3/4 heart murmur. My wife told them that that was OK, we could deal with it. They were very happy to hear that since they figured no one would adopt her because of her condition. We took Sadie to our vet for a first puppy checkup and they informed us that her heart condition was worse than what we had originally thought. She was a grade 5 with an estimated 9-12 months to live. That news certainly shook us up, but we decided that she needed someone in her life to show her love even if it was for a short time. We were told that the operation that would fix her would cost between $2500 to $4000. This amount was beyond our means, so we thought we would just have to make her life comfortable while we could.
Then we got word from the humane society that the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine which was located near our house had a program to fix Sadie’s particular type of heart murmur. All we had to do was pay for the first $500 and then they would cover everything else. Needless to say, we were all for it! After a four hour operation and a three day stay at the hospital, Sadie Mae recovered fully. The U of I doctor said she would always have a small heart murmur, but at her first visit to our vet after surgery they could not find even the slightest of murmurs! Sadie Mae was 12 weeks old when she had the operation and she is now 15 months old and healthy. She is an energetic puppy who enjoys barking, running, and pestering our two other dogs!
