Our hearts really go out to dogs when they are struggling. It doesn’t matter if they are at a local shelter or if we see them wandering the streets, we want to do all we can to help them.
Perhaps that is why our hearts were touched by the story of Simon, a Shih Tzu that was wandering around the streets of Kansas City, Missouri.
Simon is almost 11 years old and he was found in a very difficult condition. His fur was matted, but it was more than just having a problem that you would run a comb through.
The kind people at KC Pet Project were called in to help because the matted fur added an additional 6 pounds to his small body.

It’s not unusual for a Shih Tzu to have a matted coat. If they aren’t cared for properly by being brushed and washed regularly, their long fur can become tangled.
Fortunately, the veterinarians that cared for Simon were there to help.
It took two hours for the mass of fur to be cut from his body. They worked at it tediously and then a video of Simon was shared on TikTok.
Not only does it show the before and after, but they are also hoping that he will find a new home in the process.
According to one of the rescuers, the 11-year-old dog was the worst case they had ever seen. They have no idea how long it took him to get in this condition, but they know he is in better condition now.
They added that he was relatively healthy and in “surprisingly good health,” despite the fact that he had to learn how to move around without all of the fur attached.
They also treated him for chronic dry eye and a number of other minor medical conditions. Veterinarians are also hoping that his stride will correct itself over time, as he had to compensate for all of the extra fur he was carrying around.
