Rescue Shar Pei Gets A ‘Face Lift’ So He Can See Again

An 18-month-old Shar Pei rescue pup can see again, thanks to a face lift he received under the care of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The RSPCA rescued Reggie as a puppy from “unstable and unsafe conditions,” according to the New York Post.

Unfortunately, Reggie wasn’t in the clear after being rescued because his health was suffering from a combination of poor breeding and neglect.

The New York Post reports that when the RSPCA took Reggie in, he was suffering from “severe skin sores” and had bald patches of skin. The wrinkly folds of skin on his face also resulted in the poor pup developing a nasty eye infection in both eyes.

Reggie required round-the-clock eye care and his vision got so bad, the medical team decided he would need a more permanent solution to the eye infections.

Because the infections were caused by the folds of skin on Reggie’s face, the RSPCA veterinarians decided that a face-lift could help restore Reggie’s eyesight and keep it back.

On July 8, RSPCA Brighton shared a before-and-after photo of Reggie on Facebook, writing:

“Poor Reggie the Shar Pei had so many wrinkles he couldn’t see so we had to give him a facelift! He’s now recovering and enjoying his new view of the world.”

According to the American Kennel Club, it’s not uncommon for Reggie’s breed to have health issues, especially eye issues. Because of the way they’re bred, Shar Pei dogs may suffer from a myriad of health issues including eye disorders, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, immune-mediated, skin, and gastrointestinal disorders, and certain cancers.

Once Reggie has fully recovered, the RSPCA hopes to find him a wonderful family that will give him all of the love he deserves.
