When Monkey, a three-week old kitten, found himself at a San Jose shelter amid the coronavirus lockdown, the founder of Saving Grace Animal Rescue, Amber Rose, knew she needed to find him a place to stay. “He earned the name Monkey,” Amber told Love Meow. “He was so outgoing from the start and just a big personality.”
One of Saving Grace’s volunteers, Merissa, quickly offered to care for the hungry orphan. She wanted to give Monkey a safe, loving home, plus California was about to go into lockdown. The cat-lover knew quarantine would be much more bearable with a furry buddy in tow.
“He’s been through a lot this week but this fantastic foster mom makes him feel loved and safe,” said Amber Rose. “Monkey is keeping himself occupied during quarantine. He and Merissa are together full time right now!”
Monkey’s new life includes learning to walk, playing with new toys, and cuddling up with his foster mom — ideally inside her bathrobe, which this little love-bug finds extra comfy and warm. The kitten is clearly enjoying his new comfy new life, which includes regular mealtimes, playtime, and round-the-clock care.
Moreover, the kitten’s adorable antics have helped Merissa keep calm during these difficult times. The COVID-19 pandemic is isolating and scary, but little Monkey keeps her company and always manages to make his foster mom smile.
Of course, Monkey’s not the only orphaned kitten to wind up at Saving Grace Rescue lately, which (like most U.S. shelters) is struggling to cope with coronavirus closures and the advent of kitten season.
Fortunately, volunteers like Merissa have stepped up to help these rescues weather the storm. “We have had a wonderful influx of volunteer fosters,” Amber said. “We are grateful every day for our SGR family.”
