More than 100,000 puppy mills operate in the United States, and organizations, such as the Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) are working around the clock to shut down these horrible practices. The volunteers with these animal rescue organizations have worked in sting operations around the country to bust these puppy mill operations and rescue the innocent animals. Posing as potential customers, volunteers visit breeders that are suspected of running puppy mills and investigate their facility. If the breeder is in violation, the group returns with the local authorities. One of the ARC’s most recent rescue uncovered some of the most horrific puppy mill conditions many have ever seen.
The Dodo reports that the undercover volunteers visited a suspected puppy mill in Mississippi and was not allowed to tour the facility. This was a huge red flag to authorities. The couple was allowed to take a puppy with them, but that puppy was found to have severe health concerns and was obviously not properly taken care of. That is when the ARC returned to the breeder’s facility with the police and a search warrant. What the organization found was absolutely shocking.
ARC’s founder, Scotlund Haisley, spoke exclusively to the Dodo about the filth and suffering they discovered on the grounds.
Just a warning, some of the following photos are graphic.
Haisley explained how the volunteers found puppies in every space of the property. Puppies filled every dog house, building and even rabbit hutch. Some were chained, while other roamed freely around the property. Beside dogs, the ARC also found several chickens, turkeys and a donkey.
Every “off limits” area of the property was in such filthy conditions that volunteers were forced to wear respirators. This helped them deal with the heavy stench of urine and feces.
The most heartbreaking discovery of the rescue was the barn. Hundreds of animals in near death condition suffered in cages and pens. Covered in matted fur, maggots and other indescribable horrors, some of these animals had never even seen the sunlight.
One by one these animals were rescued from the hellish conditions. About 200 animals were taken from the property. Unfortunately, several animals did not make it out alive. A veterinarian revealed that the main cause of death among the animals was starvation.
Charges have not yet been brought against the puppy mill owner. However, the facility is under investigation and charges are inevitable.
