Susanne Vogel works with elephants every day at a research camp in a Southern African country called Botswana. However, Vogel recently had a much smaller animal enter the research camp. Poppy crawled into the camp with a crushed spine and unusable back legs. As soon as Vogel saw the desperate puppy, she rushed into action….
Vogel told the Dodo that the puppy literally came crawling to her because her back legs were completely immobilized. She temporarily took care of her for a few days at the camp, until she could make the eight-hour drive to the nearest veterinarian. Vogel believes that she was likely trampled by an animal or kicked by a cruel human being. Once Poppy was physically able, she and her friend from the camp made the eight-hour trip to the nearest veterinary clinic.
Vets determined that Poppy would eventually need surgery to fix her injured spine. However, after days of her getting food and anti-inflammatory medicine, the doctors decided to have Poppy continue to rehab and gain strength back before undergoing the risky surgery. In the meantime, the seven-month-old is staying with her friends in Botswana and continues to shock her rescuers each day. Poppy’s goal is to continue to put more weight on her back legs every day. In the end, I hope she gains full ability to walk or gets a wheelchair to improve her mobility. We’re rooting for you Poppy!
