Petroleum Jelly Can Protect Your Pet’s Paws From Ice and Snow

As many parts of the US continue to experience cold weather temperatures, pets that enjoy their outdoor time may need a little more protection.

Dogs’ paw pads are sensitive to temperature changes such as the heat of concrete on a summer day or the slickness of frozen ground.

In addition, the salt that some areas use to clear their roads can irritate pet skin. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this issue — petroleum jelly!

Also known by its branded name of Vaseline or more broadly as mineral oil, the versatile ointment has long been known to have healing properties, especially on damaged skin.

During the early 1400s, Native Americans used the residue from their oil pits in Pennsylvania to soothe broken skin. When chemist Robert Chesebrough patented Vaseline in 1872, he embarked on a tour of New York where he would burn his hand with open flame or chemicals to demonstrate the product’s healing capabilities!

Though there are specialized products for paw pads that work well, the key ingredient that they share is one that you likely already have in your home. The Animal Humane Society explains:

“Before walks, coat the balm on your dog’s paws to create a barrier that prevents snow, ice, and salt from getting between your pup’s toes. The balm or Vaseline also keeps their paw pads hydrated. Just be sure to have a towel handy when you get back inside to wipe it off!”

Though pet clothing is a great way to keep your pet warm and boots offer the best protection against the elements, the versatility of petroleum jelly makes it a great help. Some dogs may want to lick it off of their pads, but make sure that they ingest as little as possible.
