Tough Love: NFL Player Adopts “Not-So-Adoptable” Dog

What kind of dog goes best with purple and gold? For Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, maybe a “not-so-adoptable” one!

When Stanley, his girlfriend, and teammate Alexander Lewis visited the BARCS animal shelter recently, they had a specific dog in mind.

“We are looking for a dog that’s been here a long time and maybe not-so-adoptable,” Stanley told BARCS staff.

They were matched with Winter, “who has spent most of her six years of life falling into sad, unfortunate situations,” according to the BARCS Animal Shelter Facebook page.

BARCS said it was a hot day in Baltimore when Winter was found in a vacant property with no electricity or open windows. She was dehydrated and frightened, and had developed a long, hanging belly, likely from over breeding. It’s not an issue that can be corrected, and has probably caused many to pass her by when looking for dogs to adopt. It was no issue for Stanley.

“Well, that’s just what happens when you’ve had babies,” he said.

Stanley and his girlfriend signed Winter’s adoption papers and took her home the same day.

Winter is happy in her new forever home, but plenty of other pups in American shelters haven’t yet met their future companions. Thanks to Rescue Bank, many of these dogs have nutritious meals, but there is still plenty of work to do. Rescue Bank is turning 10 years old, and you can help them celebrate by giving the gift of a meal to a rescue animal in need.
