Crystal Lamirande’s Los Angeles apartment is smoldering in ruins, but she has a lot to be thankful for.
Lamirande returned home from work on Tuesday, March 21, to find her apartment building ablaze, thick smoke billowing out of its windows.
Her 10-year-old bichon/shih-tzu mix, Nalu, was still inside, and Lamirande rightfully feared the worst.
A team of firefighters rushed into the flaming complex following Lamirande’s plea. Andrew Klein, after crawling around the woman’s apartment searching for signs of life, eventually emerged from the smoke with Nalu’s lifeless body.
“He was totally lifeless. I picked him up and ran out of the apartment because time is key, especially with a small dog,” Klein told Global News. “Failure was not an option.”
For the next 20 minutes, firefighters performed CPR on Nalu.
Lamirande looked on in a panic as the firefighters refused to accept failure once again. Klein and others worked diligently to resuscitate Nalu and nurse him back to health. Not long after, the firefighters were captured on a bystander’s cell phone video petting his belly and sharing their gratitude.
As Lamirande explained to the firefighters, she thought Nalu had succumbed to smoke inhalation and was overjoyed to see her boy walking around once more.
“His eyes were glazed over and he was not breathing and I assumed he was dead,” she said. “The firefighter said ‘I’m a positive person. Let’s just get him back.’”
After the next 24 hours in an oxygen chamber, Nalu was back to his plucky self. And Klein, who owns two dogs himself, was glad to have helped save him.
“He was essentially dead, so to see him kissing people and walking around wagging his tail was definitely a good feeling,” Klein said. “He’s very happy, and we’re very happy, too.”
