Virginia Couple Reunites With Lost Dog, Four Years After She Disappeared

Life can be truly unpredictable, in the best and worst ways. Stories of triumph and of happy endings, despite the odds, have always been compelling. One family in Suffolk, Virginia is celebrating just that after a phone call changed their lives this summer.

It all started in 2017 when Adam Cusimano and his husband, Frank, stepped out of their home to smoke a cigarette.

The night was like any other, with lovely weather that they stood on the porch and enjoyed. With them was their Shiba Inu mix, Missy. And then, she wasn’t with them anymore.

“We honestly do not know how she got out,” Adam told WTKR. “We lost our minds. We probably didn’t sleep for about 72 hours,” he continued.

The couple frantically searched the surrounding area and shelters, hoping and praying they would find Missy. There was no sign of her anywhere. No one called to say they’d found her. The pair gave up hope.

“I never thought that I would see her again,” Adam explained to WTKR.

Time passed. In 2021, one call changed everything. It was the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center. Missy had turned up, and they’d scanned her microchip.

They wanted to know, had she been missing for a few days? It had been more than 1,400 days.

Those four years, she’d been alive, fending for herself. “It just shows the efficacy and gives people a reason to microchip their animals,” NACC Bureau Manager Michelle Dosson told News 3.

Missy emerged from the ordeal with a bad case of pneumonia but is recovering steadily and has been over the moon to be back with her family.

For Adam and Frank, it’s like a wound has suddenly been healed, and it’s all thanks to the efforts of a kind stranger who took Missy in, and the team at the Norfolk Animal Care Center.
