Meghan Markle’s Latest Cause Gives Rescues Royal PlatformJ. Swanson
England’s newest princess, Meghan Markle, just gave animal rescue the royal seal of approval.
Though she’s known for her acting and, of course, her marriage to Harry, Markle has a well-known affinity for rescued dogs. Her first rescues were Bogart and Guy, respective lab/shepherd and Beagle mixes that Markle adopted while working on Suits in Toronto. (Guy, who once lingered on a Kentucky kill-list before meeting Markle at an adoption event, has since ridden shotgun with the Queen and inspired a new book).
British media is also buzzing with reports that Harry and Meghan, who is expecting, have recently adopted a third dog, though they’ve been rather coy about this latest addition. All we know for sure is that Guy’s new sibling is a female black Labrador with a difficult-to-pronounce name. And she’s a rescue, of course.
Regardless, the new Duchess of Essex remains equally committed to England’s common rescues, as evidenced by her official support of The Mayhew Animal Home. This London-based charity promotes community-based animal welfare programs around the UK and overseas. Markle recently dropped in to meet some of the dogs, cats, and people involved in this charity’s outstanding work.
The lucky new friends included a therapy-dog Roobarb, a therapy dog offering emotional support to dementia patients living in care homes. A formerly homeless man recounted to Markle how Mayhew helped him care for his Staffordshire bull terriers, Azzy and Gallis, when he lived on the streets.
But it was Minnie, a one-year-old Jack Russell seeking a new home who really got the Duchess’ attention. However, when Markel, who cuddled this sweet girl far longer than the other rescues, was asked if she’d like another rescue, the Duchess politely demurred: “We can’t get another dog before the baby, our hands are full.”
Fortunately, Minnie’s royal cuddle session has opened a floodgate of adoption offers, with hundreds of people calling Mayhew to inquire about the young terrier. Within just hours of meeting the Duchess, Minnie already had a new home lined up, and Mayhew expects her to be with her new forever family very soon.
