The hero Max, a 17-year-old deaf and partially blind blue heeler family dog, protected three-year-old Aurora in the Australian bush.
Aurora wandered into Queensland’s Southern Downs and her loyal companion, Max followed to keep her safe. Once the family realized the toddler was missing they were frantic and contacted the local police.
A search was started in the area around the home. Evening Standard reports, “The young girl went missing from her home at about 3pm local time on Friday and by Saturday morning 100 police officers and volunteers were desperately searching for her.”
State Emergency Service area controller Ian Phipps stated, “The area around the house is quite mountainous and is very inhospitable terrain to go walking in, so she’d travelled quite a distance with her dog that was quite loyal to her.”
Aurora was found, just over a mile away from the house, when her grandmother, Leisa Bennett, heard crying coming from the top of the mountain. She told ABC News, “When I heard her yell ‘Grammy’ I knew it was her. I shot up the mountain … and when I got to the top, the dog came to me and led me straight to her.”
Both made it out with only minor scratches, which is amazing because of the cold rainy weather on Friday evening. Max kept Aurora warm and safe by cuddling with her for 15 hours.
Max kept the toddler safe and was declared an honorary police dog, at 8am on Saturday. Queensland Police posted, “SUCH A GOOD BOY, MAX! He stayed with his 3-year-old human who was lost near Warwick last night while we frantically searched for her.”
