Maverick, a nine-year-old Golden Retriever, is battling lymphoma for the second time. He has been responding well to chemotherapy, but gave his humans quite the scare this month when he had to be rushed to the animal hospital’s ICU.
Once he was discharged, his owner, Joey Maxwell, wanted to give Maverick a special ride around town. Since Maverick is unable to walk, Maxwell thought it’d be a good idea to use a wagon, so he went to his local Lowe’s in Deland, Florida. Unfortunately, there were no more wagons left due to Hurricane Matthew, but once Lowe’s heard about Maverick’s story, they knew they had to help.
They called all of the stores in the area until they found one with a wagon, had it sent to their store, and then put it together for Maxwell. They even gave it to him at a discounted price, which left Maxwell in tears.
When Maxwell got home, he got the wagon ready and put his beloved furbaby in it. Him and his wife wheeled Maverick around downtown Deland, where he got so much love and attention. They had hamburgers and dog-friendly ice cream, special dog treats, and made so many new friends.
According to Maverick’s facebook page, Everybody Loves Maverick, he is doing well and is still getting his chemo treatments. But the best news of all? He had a full body CT scan yesterday, and there is no evidence of cancer anywhere in his body!
