A woman named Marika Hamilton Meeks was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and her whole world came crashing down.
She felt extremely isolated and had a really tough time with it. She got very wrapped up in fear and anxiety and was constantly worrying.
But of course Marika wasn’t the only one who was having a hard time with her sickness; her youngest daughter was struggling to cope with this situation as well.
Marika then decided to adopt a dog, but she had no idea how much she would change their lives. Their new dog, named Stella, helped the family heal in an amazing way. She offered a sense of comfort and helped the family get through these hardships. She also brought Marika and her daughter closer together and helped her daughter deal with her mother’s diagnoses as well.
After they adopted Stella, Marika was in remission, but was still stuck in a very miserable place. Stella helped get her out of that darkness and because of Stella, Marika started living in the moment again.
Marika always brought Stella out in public with her and soon realized that she had a purpose. Marika created a coloring book that told her and Stella’s story, hoping to inspire people to live life to the fullest and encouraging them to adopt.
Although Marika doesn’t know what the future holds for her, she will always have Stella by her side to help her get through whatever is thrown her way.
“I realized that it wasn’t so much about trying to find out a way that I could survive,” Marika told The Dodo. “It was about how to live life while I still was alive.”
