When the call of the wild came for Charlie Hammerton, this 25-year-old and his pet ferret, Bandit, answered.
According to SWNS, the pair travelled through 11 countries in a campervan that Hammerton bought after he quit his job with the Royal Air Force and sold all his possessions.
The native of Cornwall, England, managed to raise nearly $20,000 from selling off all his belongings – which included 3 cars. The money that he made funded his roadtrip with Bandit over 8 months.
Hammerton said to SWNS, “Traveling was the most amazing experience of my life and it was completely liberating. We followed the sun across the world and camped under the stars in amazing places. It was beautiful and I spent it with my best friend.”
Hammerton added, “I have less money now but I am much wealthier as a person.”
According to Hammerton, prior to his trip, he had been rocked by the losses of his mother, best friend, and adopted mom – all in the span of a short time – so gaining emotional wealth on his travels was quite important to him.
As he grieved, the darkness he felt inspired Hamerton to be bold and rather than put off his dream vacation for an extra year, he decided to make drastic changes in order to make it happen.
As he explained, “It took a lot of courage for me to do what I did. At the time I was living in a nice flat, had a good job and had three cars. I had a lot of savings behind me and I was lucky enough to be very secure. But it was all just ‘stuff’ to me and didn’t really mean anything.”
It wasn’t a hard decision either for Hammerton to bring along Bandit, who he had rescued back in 2015. The little ferret was a true blessing to Hammerton and helped him through the loss of his loved ones.
Together, Hammerton and Bandit make it across 25 different cities during their 8-month journey, raising money along the way for various causes that were important to Hammerton and his loved ones.
“The trip was completely liberating and I really did have an amazing experience,” he said.
After returning from the 8-month trek with Bandit, Hammerton is now traveling across England educating school kids about self-confidence, outdoor survival skills, and bushcraft.
