Okay, seriously, I want to major in Puppy Studies!
At the University of Delaware, students in the Puppy Raiser program (PRoUD) are raising puppies to be trained as seeing-eye dogs.
All the pups come from The Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ, the oldest school for seeing-eye dogs, founded in 1929. The PRoUD students raise the puppies until they are around 14 months of age. The Puppy Raisers socialize the dogs and teach them basic obedience so when the pups return to The Seeing Eye, they are ready to begin advanced training before being placed with a deserving human.
PRoUD founder and club leader, Kim Winnington, wasn’t allowed a dog growing up and decided it would be her mission to work with dogs as an adult. Smart girl!
The puppies are with the college students 24/7, even attending classes. WHOA, these pups REALLY ARE learning a ton! Woot! The students say, “We take care of our puppies and they take care of us.” Okay, Puppy Raisers, just don’t share too much of your Ramen noodles! 😄
So far, over 100 dogs have come through Puppy U. Kleenex wanted to acknowledge all their hard work and amazing efforts. And so do we! 👏
And while these university students aren’t exactly majoring in “Puppy Studies,” they are coming pretty darn close (and are doing a PAWSOME deed in the process).
