A Shelter Dog Passed Away During The Birth Of Her Puppies, So Her Doggy Friend Stepped In To Help
By Ashley Maisano
Lily Rose was in horrible shape when she was pulled from Fulton County Animal Services in Georgia; she had heart worms and mange, and on top of that, she was pregnant!
Rescue Dogs Rock NYC heard about Lily Rose from a video taken at the shelter, and after learning she was pregnant, they knew they had to help her. So, soon after Lily made her way to their vet partner in Maryland.
As soon as she got there, she went into labor. But it didn’t work out the way it should’ve. They didn’t know why, but the puppies weren’t coming out on their own, so they had to do a C-section. A C-section was risky, but it was the only way to get the pups out. They delivered eight healthy puppies, but unfortunately Lily Rose didn’t survive the surgery. It turns out that a large stillborn puppy was blocking the birth canal, which is why the puppies couldn’t come out during labor.
The medical team tried desperately to get her back, working on her for a full ten minutes. But she had already crossed the rainbow bridge. She will be buried with her stillborn puppy. Lily Rose may be gone, but her legacy remains: her eight puppies. And they were going to do whatever it took to keep these babies healthy.
Without their mother, the orphaned puppies desperately needed a mom. Luckily, one of Lily’s doggy friends was ready and able to adopt them. Her friend, Pocahontas, was rescued from a flooded basement by the same rescue that took Lily in. She also gave birth recently, so while her puppies are being weaned, she will never take over caring for Lily’s babies also.
Pocahontas has been a great mother and adoptive mother to all 16 puppies. All of the pups are healthy and doing great. To help Lily Rose’s puppies, you can donate to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC here.
