They’re sensitive, stout and may even feature a few wrinkles, but the Boxer breed is one of the most energetic and playful dogs around.
Originally bred from an extinct German species of dog, known as Bullenbeisser, Boxers were once trained to hunt large game. In World War I, Boxers were employed by the German police force as guard dogs.
Boxers can be seen today in a few different color combinations, although most sport a white chest. The average lifespan for the breed is about 10 years but white Boxers have been known to develop health issues earlier on, leading to shorter lives.
The Boxer was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904, and given its prevalence in North America and Europe, those interested in finding a Boxer are not relegated to a breeder. Most animal shelters see their fair share of Boxers coming in and out, hoping for a forever home.
The AKC currently ranks Boxers as their 10th most popular breed. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be at the top of your list. Test you knowledge of Boxers in our quiz below.
