How You Can Help Shelter Animals This Holiday Season

The holiday season is here and it often makes people feel more festive and more giving. So while you’re spreading the spirit of the times around, don’t forget about our four-legged friends. Homeless dogs and cats are in need during the holidays too. Even if you don’t have room in your home or budget to take a pet into your house, there are other ways to help.

Look around your home to see what might benefit your local rescue shelter. Old blankets, towels and newspapers can help add extra insulation to pet beds during the cold winter months. Additionally, shelters always love food donations. Maybe there are a few cans of pet food in your home your animal won’t eat. While shopping, buy some food for your local shelter animals as well. But if you really want to make an impact, host a food drive. You can organize one at work, school or during your holiday parties. Just ask everyone to bring dog or cat food cans to donate.

Social Network
If you’re an avid Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr user, incorporate your love for animals into this pastime. Shelters often post photos of pets in need for adoption. Share those pictures with everyone in your social network to increase the chance the animal will get adopted.

Give the gift of your time. Dedicate a few hours each week (or more if you can) to your neighborhood pet shelter.
