Residents of Florida prepared for the worst as Hurricane Irma swept through the state. Many Floridians evacuated to safer grounds, while others decided to stay put in their homes to weather the storm.
Roommates Georgia Mott, 19, and Taittyn Fischer, 18, agreed on the latter. But since Okeechobee County has no pet-friendly shelters, they knew they had to come up with a safer idea than leaving their two horses outside during the storm.
That’s when they decided to transform a room in their home into a make-shift shelter while they waited for Irma to pass. They covered the floor in wood shavings and stacked piles of hay bales along the wall so the horses would feel comfortable and have something to eat. They also hung up water buckets on the wall so the horses would have something to drink during the hurricane.
The two horses, Goose and soon-to-be mother Dixie, walked into their house and through their kitchen to their new temporary room. The roommates said the horses acted completely normal and that this unique situation didn’t even seem to faze them.
The girls posted pictures and videos on Facebook of the horses’ new room and of them walking through their kitchen. The post wound up going viral with more than 19,000 shares, and hundreds of people commented to thank the girls for taking such great care of their pets. “We need more humans like you,” one person wrote.
Thankfully, Irma is over and the girls got away with no real damage. Goose and Dixie returned to the yard and were happy to be back.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the kind words, well wishes, and prayers,” Mott wrote on Facebook. “My prayers go out to those who didn’t fare so well.”
After hearing the many stories of people Top of Formabandoning their pets during these hurricanes, it is very heartwarming to hear one like this of people going above and beyond to protect their pets. Faith in humanity restored!
