The destruction of Hurricane Harvey has continued to spread in Texas, even after the storm has shifted north into neighboring states. The storm dropped over 50 inches of rain in Houston, killing 30. People from across the country have leaped to help Houston in nearly every capacity. Disasters like Harvey have a way of showing just how strong and caring humans can be. Chance Ward and his son Rowdy from Cleveland, Texas became a perfect example of this human generosity, riding in to save lives on horseback during one of the worst natural disasters the United States has seen.
Tens of thousands tried to flee the city before the storm hit, but countless people were forced to leave pets and livestock behind, and that doesn’t include the countless homeless animals living in Houston. The livestock was of particular concern since most of the animals were fenced in, giving them no chance to escape. Ward’s experience with livestock, and his extraordinarily brave horses, made him the perfect person to try and help. He was even able to have a number of the rescues captured on camera, and he has been sharing them on his Facebook.
Chance and Rowdy have been out every day since the rains started. He’s saved dozens of horses, hundreds of cattle, and any creature or human he comes across in the flood waters. While the rains have tapered off, rescue efforts continue, as will the work of the Ward family.
What’s most impressive about the father-son duo is how well they take the chaos. They simply go out to help, and their effortless demeanor is a large part of why they are able to keep animals calm during their most terrified moments.
Ward isn’t alone in his efforts either, as he well knows. In a heartfelt Facebook post, he showed humility and grace in his work and offered up hope for those still battling against the destruction.
“There is a lot of sad out of this storm, but I look at the positive. I have helped in numerous floods with livestock. We were able to swim in and save four of these horses today. One of the greatest feelings in the world is having my best partner by my side. My 17-year-old son. If you look you can see us talking as [if] this is no big deal. There are a lot of great cowboys, plenty that are willing to do the same as us. We make livestock our first priority, as I know many are helping people. Thanks to all the hands that help us today.”
