The Columbus Police Department in Ohio held a very special memorial service for one of their own on Friday, but he wasn’t a human. A beloved horse, Equine Officer “Willie,” who served the department for eleven years, sadly passed away earlier this month, a week after having a tumor removed from his colon.
His partner of ten years, Officer John Shoopman, is devastated at the loss and will always remember his best friend.
“We really developed a good partnership,” he told Inside Edition. “You only have a horse maybe once in a lifetime that you can really connect to and know it. Great friend, partner, trust, always there for me.”
Willie was one of ten horses with Columbus Police Department’s Mounted Unit. Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten.
“He will be remembered throughout Columbus as the horse who knew his way to his favorite places to get a carrot or an apple,” police wrote on their Facebook page.
