Homeless Teen Reunited With Dog That He Surrendered In Desperation

Animal shelters see it all. One shelter worker, Kris Robinson, had thought she’d seen it all. But then she encountered a sweet pooch named Jada, and her owner.

According to WREG, Robinson works as the Interim Shelter Director at the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter in Mississippi.

She was at work one day when a teen came in along with his 4 to 5-month-old shepherd-rottweiler mix named Jada.

The 17-year-old boy was distraught as he asked Robinson if it was possible for him to surrender his dog. At the time, the shelter was full so Robinson told him it wouldn’t be possible. That is when the teen broke down and revealed that he was homeless and had reached a point where he could no longer provide his beloved Jada with proper care. It was heartbreaking!

As Robinson explained, “And he said, ‘Well, I can’t take care of her anymore. I live under a bridge,’ and it broke my heart. For this young man to just be 17 and down on his luck, and no matter what problems he’s facing, he still took the time to walk her over her and make sure somebody was going to take care of her, I think that says a lot about his character.”

Robinson took in Jada, who was heartbroken that her human was leaving her behind. In fact, Robinson shared a picture of the devoted Jada on Facebook, who was lying on the ground beside a trash bag full of food that her owner had brought in for her.

She shared the picture in a post on social media where she wrote, “This is where she layed after her owner surrendered her today with her plastic bag of dog food and a blanket. She is devastated. I can’t be mad at her owner though. He is 17, says he lives under a bridge in Tate county. He WALKED her all the way to the shelter and asked us to please take her because he can’t afford to keep her. She’s about 4 mos old and she kept herself pinned to his legs while he was here. We are full but how could we not take her in.”

After posting, it wasn’t long before Robinson had received thousands of requests from people looking to adopt Jada. But surprisingly, she was also struck by the number of people who were looking to help out the teenager.

According to WREG, Robinson stated, “We’re a shelter, so we’re concerned about the dog. But ultimately we were concerned about him and him getting off the street and getting some help.”

She had taken down the teen’s information when he came in to surrender Jada, and she used it to get the authorities to track him down. Robinson then reunited Jada with her owner, and the authorities came through in that they were able to find the boy and his dog a place to stay together!

Robinson was thrilled to be able to later share the good news that he’d been able to stay at someone’s house while he and Jada get their lives back on track. The local First United Methodist Church in Senatobia then stepped up to begin collecting donations in order to assist the family who was caring for the teen and Jada. Hopefully, they will never again have to be separated.
