The Most Popular ‘Cattooist’ In The World Got Her Start After Losing A Very Special Friend
How do you remember a very special pet?
Some people keep pictures, others hang up paw prints. Still others opt for something a little more personal.
Tattoos are nothing new. Once upon a time, any sailor you met could direct you to the nearest inky needle. But it’s likely their forearms weren’t featuring fine art in the form of a friendly feline. For that treatment, you need to see a specialist like Jessica Holmes.
Holmes is known as the “Cattooist” of Western Australia. According to ABC Online, her intricate and lifelike cat portraits have become so popular, her business is starting to attract friends of felines from around the world.
“It turns out that people from all over the world really like cats,” she told ABC Online.
Longtime tattoo artist Holmes didn’t start out inking intricate cats on arms, legs, or anywhere else, for that matter. It wasn’t until she welcomed a cat into her life for the first time, just over two years ago, that Holmes even considered cat tattoos.
Sadly, Toli died in 2017 after a veterinary surgeon tried to remove a piece of string she had eaten.
“It threw my mental health out,” Holmes said. “But it also helped me connect to my clients a lot more. Especially to ones that may have already lost their cat or cats.”
Holmes has since helped fellow feline lovers from Brisbane to Brazil remember their furry friends in the most personal way. She starts by looking through photos of the animals and finding those that provide the best angle for the final placement
“You’re capturing a portrait,” she says. “If the slightest thing is out of shape or if the slightest color is not the right color it throws the whole portrait out.”
Women and men alike are interested in Holmes “purrticular” set of skills, but she notes, “cat dads” are not as common.
“There’s not a lot, but yeah … they’re out there,” she said. “And they’re exactly the same as the cat ladies, just a bit on the manlier side.”
If you have some space to spare on your body, Holmes can help you out with a beautiful “cattoo.” Watch her in action in the video below!
