Harris Teeter of Matthews, NC, is recalling Abound Chicken and Rice Dog Food due to elevated levels of vitamin D.

This recall joins a growing number of others for the year of 2018.

This voluntary recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity

Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as:

  • vomiting
  • loss of appetite
  • increased thirst
  • increased urination
  • excessive drooling
  • weight loss

Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal failure.

What should you do?

Pet owners and those caring for pets should stop feeding the products listed above immediately. Consumers with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed above and are exhibiting these symptoms, should contact their veterinarian.

Harris Teeter has removed the products from their shelves. If you have purchased one of the recalled items, you can return it to Harris Teeter for a full refund.
