Staff then thought it’d be a good idea to get her outside for some playtime, but they had to carry her out since she wasn’t sure how to walk on a leash. When Harriet was in an open space, something she never had before, she froze up.
Being crammed in a tiny cage with no room to move around is the only thing she’s known for her whole life. But staff was not going to give up on Harriet. Shelter volunteer manager Leslie Menichino laid a blanket down for Harriet, but all she did was stand on it. She started to fall asleep while standing up, since being provided comfort was not something she was used to.
Menichino started filming Harriet falling asleep, which you can see in the video below. Then, she helped her lie down on the blanket, which is the closest thing Harriet has ever had to a bed.
Harriet eventually laid down and fell asleep. Seeing this brought tears to Menichino’s eyes. They believe that in the cages at the meat farm, they would fall asleep standing up while the other dogs held them up since they were so crammed. Now Harriet never has to worry about that ever again.
She still has a long way to go before she can be adopted, but her recovery is very promising. She has made great strides and has since learned to walk on a leash. She also now takes treats from people’s hands. This pup has come such a long way since escaping her awful past!
