A Grocery Store In Italy Made Special Carts So That Dogs Can Shop With Their Humans

Whenever we make a quick pit stop at the grocery store for some bread or milk, it would be nice to be able to bring in our dogs with us, right? Well, that is exactly what one Italian supermarket did for its customers by designing their shopping carts to accommodate people with dogs.

The results were quite the hit – and we can certainly see why.

Gianfranco Galantini, the owner of Unes, the grocery chain, was inspired for the idea after witnessing many sad-looking dogs outside, waiting for their owners. Unes, located in the Italian city of Liano, then decided to make the shopping experience more inclusive for pet owners by letting owners bring their dogs inside.

It wasn’t long before Unes began offering special carts built with a partition that allowed dog owners to put their dogs inside the cart, yet keep them separate from the groceries.

As Galantini shared with La Repubblica, “The owners of small dogs can now avoid having to leave them outside, giving them peace of mind to take all the time they need to make their purchases. The initiative launched just recently, but we’ve already noticed how much our customers appreciate it.”

It is already legal for dogs to enter into stores, so long as the owner had control over them. However, the shopping carts give owners an added sense of security while shopping with their pets.

Galantini even said that all the carts were wiped down and disinfected after each use. He never experienced any adverse problems, though he did say that one dog barked a bit at first, but then “calmed down immediately” once the cart started moving.

The idea was so successful that Unes’s corporate management began asking Galantini about introducing the idea to other Unes stores across the country.

One can only hope this idea will go international so we can all shop with our dogs in a cute little grocery cart.
