Elderly Woman Shares Emotional Tribute To Late Rescue Dog, Grandpa Grover

A 12-year-old Chihuahua and pug mix named Grandpa Grover (formerly called Fig Newton), was rescued from El Cajon Shelter over three years ago by Frosted Faces Foundation (FFF), a senior dog rescue.

Senior dogs are often overlooked at shelters but deserve to spend their golden years in a loving home. That is why FFF started rescuing older dogs from nearby shelters and finding them loving homes for the rest of their lives, no matter how short or long that may be.

Shortly after Grover arrived at the rescue, he met his new mother, an elderly woman named Jane. The two instantly bonded and spent the past three and a half years enjoying each other’s company. Grover recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge after battling kidney disease. Jane shared how special her time was with the old pup with FFF.

She wrote, “I first met Grover on Aug 23, 2020. My daughter Kate talked me into going to FF to meet a new furry baby, who would become MY new furry baby. She and Kelly decided this old, very quiet chug(chihuahua/ pug mix) would be ‘the one.’ I was sitting on the floor watching dogs running around crazy and she put Grover, as he would be called, on my lap, and we watched all the excitement together, beginning our adventure in life.

“To most, we had a rather boring existence, but it was perfect for us. We spent most of our time either resting or napping together. He in one of his three doggie beds and I on the couch trying to read or watch TV. Sometimes we’d actually cuddle up together under a wooby and purposely sleep. He liked visiting Kate, her partner Lee, and her kitty Truffle, even when she’d hiss and swat at him. He really loved his ‘spa day’ when Kate would give him a bath with lots of bubbles and warm water, then get nice and dry with his own big fluffy towel. He’d even run around afterward…he felt so good.”

She went on to say that he enjoyed his time outside but when he had enough chatting with the neighbors he would pull to go back inside. He was picky about his canine friends and had just two he could “tolerate”, a yorkie named Jolee and a Chihuahua named Milo.

Grover loved to eat and even at the age of fifteen would still dance around for his meals. Jane recalls she knew that her time was growing short with her little pal.

“Last week on March 15, by the way he looked at me, I knew he’d be leaving me. After Dr Russell did his exam and consulted with me, he was put in my arms one last time to say good bye. I truly loved this old puppy and hope he was happy and loved this old lady too. What a privilege it has been to share the last three and a half years with Grover, and I thank FF, including EVERY ONE of you, for this special time.”
