Easter is quickly approaching, and unfortunately people purchase popular Easter pets – rabbits, chickens and ducks – to give to kids as gifts along with their baskets.
But the people who are purchasing these animals don’t realize that these living gifts often become neglected when the recipients lose interest or are unable to care for them. This causes the animals to live horrible lives, end up in shelters, or even die. There have even been many stories of people releasing domestic rabbits into the wild because they don’t want them anymore. This is horrible for the bunnies, as they are not able to survive in the wild.
People need to remember that these animals should not be given as pets and that they are a life-long commitment. Whatever presents you decide to give this Easter, the Humane Society asks you to think your decision through. Perhaps a chocolate bunny or chick would make a much better gift!
Sadly, dozens of dyed chicks were going to be sold as Easter presents at a pet store, but people rescued them just in time. The chicks were colored green and pink when their eggs were illegally injected with dye.
Luckily, they were saved and taken to a farm sanctuary where they outgrew their colors and finally have a safe place to call home. Each one has their own personality and they are doing great and feeling love for the first time!
