This Boxer, named Duncan, did not have an easy start to life. When he was born, his rear legs were fused together and his pelvis was severely deformed. Because of this, vets told his owners, Gary Walters and Amanda Giese, that they’d either have to euthanize him or have his legs removed.
Of course the couple didn’t even hesitate to choose the latter option. Duncan underwent a successful surgery to have his rear legs removed. Within 30 minutes after the surgery, he was already up and walking around! They tried to strap him into a wheelchair, but Duncan wanted no part of it. He managed to get around on his own just fine, even with just two legs.
Since then, Duncan has appeared on talk shows, amassed over 120,000 Instagram followers, and has become a social media sensation. His positive attitude and perseverance has been an inspiration to all, and Duncan has remained a happy dog. His family has loved him unconditionally and vice versa.
But his family’s life came crashing down when Duncan went missing last week after an awful accident. Walters, Giese, their two kids and three dogs were driving from Yellowstone National Park to a cabin in Island Park around 11 p.m. last Friday night. Their teenage son, Beast, was driving and wound up hitting a Bison who was in the road. The impact of the hit sent the truck spinning in circles before it slammed into two power poles and rolled over several times.
Thankfully, no one in the car was seriously injured, but all of their dogs went missing. They were able to find two of them nearby within an hour after the crash, but Duncan was nowhere to be found. The family assumed the worst and thought he was lying dead somewhere, or at the very least severely injured.
The family, joined by EMTs, police, and community members, looked everywhere for Duncan with flashlights, but to no avail. Giese and Walters then turned to social media and posted on their nonprofit organization Panda Paws Rescue’s Facebook page. Their organization helps animals with special needs and has a huge following on Facebook, so they hoped they could spread the word quickly about their missing dog.
The next day, Giese received a phone call from a man three miles away who said he saw a two-legged dog. He didn’t think anything of it until he heard people in the area talking about the missing pup. He then saw the story online and called the owners.
The search group then quickly went to the area and finally spotted Duncan. Giese’s daughter yelled out to him, “Do you want a cookie?” and of course Duncan came running toward them. Thankfully, Duncan was not injured.
“After Duncan was thrown from a car, ran three miles and survived bear and wolf and whatever else could have eaten him, he is absolutely fine,” Walters told East Idaho News.
Duncan managed to survive, and with just two legs! This just further proves his resiliency. Duncan’s family is so relieved to have him back and is so grateful for everyone who helped along the way.
