A 10-year-old Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu named Nalu was trapped in his owner Crystal Limirand apartment in Santa Monica, California, after it went up on flames. Limirand desperately tried to save her dog, but couldn’t get to him.
When firefighters arrived, Limirand alerted them that her furry best friend was still inside. They worked hard to get the flames under control, and then pulled Nalu’s lifeless body from one of the bedrooms.
Firefighter Andrew Klein knew he was unresponsive just by his dead weight, but refused to give up. He spent the next 20 minutes giving Nalu CPR as well as using a pet oxygen mask, while his tearful owner watched with horror.
Thankfully, the dog finally began to breathe on his own and regained consciousness, even regaining the ability to walk around.
“Once he started breathing, it’s as if the big weight lifted off my chest and I’m overwhelmed with joy and tears as I witness the dog come back to life,” Klein told The Independent.
They brought the dog to a local animal hospital, where he was give further care. He’s now recovering great and has been reunited with his owner.
Limirand said her apartment was destroyed, but she’s just grateful to still have her best friend.
